December 10, 2018

There’s a new addition to the Lexington Recycling Center on Thompson Road. Lexington Emergency Management took delivery of the shelter on Friday, December 7, 2018.

The shelter is 10 feet wide by 48 feet long and weighs 19,000 pounds. It seats 90 persons and can accommodate two dozen more.

When installed on a concrete foundation, the shelter is rated to withstand an F5 tornado or other severe storms.

Installation is expected to be completed by March 2019.  The project was funded through a federal and state mitigation grant program.

The total project cost is approximately $70,000.

Watch the slide show as the shelter is unloaded.
